How to identify 11 common problems in your furnace

Do you have an old or modern furnace at home? If so, then it's important to be aware of the common furnace issues that can occur. Whether your furnace is gas, electric or even a heat pump, there can be many different problems that arise. In this article, we'll go over some of the most common furnace issues and how to identify and fix them. From pilot lights to air filters, blower motors and circuit breakers, we'll cover all the basics when it comes to understanding your furnace system and identifying potential problems before they become bigger ones. So read on to learn more about how you can keep your heating cycle running smoothly!

1. Dirty Air Filters

One of the most common furnace issues is dirty air filters. Dirt and debris build up in the filter, reducing airflow to the furnace and making it run less efficiently. It’s important to regularly check and replace your furnace filters to ensure proper airflow. To give you a starting point for what frequency you’re looking at for changing furnace filters, size matters. Thicker filters have more media available to capture contaminants, so a 5-inch filter requires less frequent changes than a 1-inch filter. Filter efficiency also has an impact – this is expressed as MERV, which stands for minimum efficiency reporting value. In general, this is how often changing furnace filters needs to be done:

  • For 1- to 2-inch filters, replace them every 1 to 3 months

  • For 3- to 4-inch filters, replace them every 3 to 6 months

  • For 5- to 6-inch filters, replace them every 6 to 9 months

2. Pilot Light Issues:

If your gas furnace has a pilot light, it may be an indication that there is a problem with the system - particularly if it won't stay lit or goes out frequently. The issue could be caused by a faulty thermocouple or other mechanical issue, so you should have a professional inspect your furnace if this occurs.

3. Gas Supply Problems

If you have a gas furnace, then make sure the gas supply is working properly. Check the access panel to make sure the gas valve is open, and ensure that there are no blockages in the air ducts.

4. Heat Exchanger Damage

The heat exchanger is the part of the furnace that transfers heat from burning fuel to your home's air supply. If it has cracks or other damage, it can result in unsafe levels of carbon monoxide entering your home. This is why modern furnaces come with a safety feature that shuts off the system if this happens - but you should still have a professional inspect your furnace for any potential issues.

5. Faulty Thermostat Settings

Another common cause of furnace problems is incorrect thermostat settings. Make sure your thermostat is set to the correct temperature and that it is working properly. Honestly sometimes it can be as simple as changing a battery that will save you money.

6. Lack of Sufficient Airflow

If the air coming out of your vents isn't as warm as it should be, then there may not be enough airflow for your furnace to function properly. This could be due to a dirty filter or blocked ducts - so make sure to check those first before calling a professional.

7. Faulty Electrical Panels

An electrical panel can also cause problems if it's not wired correctly or has any damaged components. Make sure to inspect the breaker box and electrical panel regularly to ensure they are working properly.

8. Limit Switch Issues

The limit switch, which turns off the furnace when it gets too hot, can also malfunction. If this happens, it can result in the furnace running continuously until it overheats and shuts off - so make sure to have a professional inspect your system for any potential issues.

9. Blower Motor Issues

The blower motor is responsible for circulating air throughout your home. If it isn't working correctly, then your furnace won't be able to heat your home properly. Make sure to check the wiring and connections of the blower motor regularly to ensure there are no problems.

10. Noisy Furnace

A noisy furnace can be a sign of an issue with the fan or other components of the system. Make sure to have a professional inspect your furnace if you notice any abnormal noises coming from it.

11. Leaks

Leaks in the furnace can indicate a problem with the system, so make sure to have a professional inspect your furnace if you notice any leaks or signs of water damage.

By understanding some of the most common furnace issues and how to identify them, you can help ensure that your heating system runs efficiently and safely all year round. If you ever encounter any problems with your furnace, always consult a professional for advice and assistance.
